So, you have applied for the Canadian citizenship and preparing for the citizenship test. Now you might have been thinking that what happens after an applicant passes the citizenship test. Well, after passing the citizenship test, you are invited for the Canadian citizenship ceremony that occurs usually after six months of passing the test. For what the ceremony is organized?

The main objective to work behind the organization of citizenship ceremony is to offer the citizenship certificate to eligible people after they take oath. Whether you want to become a Canadian citizen or you are interested to get your Canadian citizenship back, you need to go through all the steps of getting the citizenship and attending the Canadian citizenship ceremony is the final step of the process. You will be notified for the ceremony directly or through Email after you passes the eligibility test. The date, time and place of the ceremony is informed you through an invitation letter.

What happens in the ceremony?

Generally community groups host the ceremony which may take place anywhere across the country and any time of the year. On the other hand, special ceremonies are also celebrated during the citizenship week, Canada day and some other days of national importance. The citizenship ceremony can be attended by all those adult people who have been invited for the same as well children aged 14 or over parents of whom have filled their names for citizenship. Children below 14 years don’t need to go but they are welcomed if you take them with you.

A citizenship judge carries out the ceremony and leads you with some other people to take oath. In this way, you accept rights and responsibilities of the Canadian citizenship. People who want to swear the oath on their holy book; they are permitted for the same. Then you get a citizenship certificate as a proof that you become a Canadian citizen. You cannot use this certificate as a travel document and you will have to get the Canadian passport to travel outside Canada.

What to bring in the ceremony?

Apart from bringing all the original immigration documents, you should carry your permanent residence card of Canada in the ceremony. You should also bring expiry PR card if you have. Moreover, if you were permanent resident of Canada before 28th June, 2002, you will have to bring the record of landing.

How to apply for the passport?

You will have to wait for at least two business days after the citizenship ceremony to apply for the passport. You can apply for the passport online; there are two options for passport application- for adults and for child. You can apply for the one on the basis of your age group. People with 16 years age or more are considered as adult for this purpose while below than 16 years come under child. Applying for the passport in the right way helps the process to go on smoothly.
